Wow! Just when you think nothing is going on around town after the storms have cleared, yet again Nashville’s creative hub strikes back with a vengeance and great fury of fun. See below.
Today, at 6pm, at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, Nashville Food Bloggers invite you to Dinner and a Movie to Fight Hunger: A screening of “A Place at the Table” and Food Advocacy Fair hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, The Tennessean, Delvin Farms, and Tech Works. The documentary is a film by the people who brough you “Food, Inc.” It follows 3 families struggling with food insecurity to show how hunger poses serious economic, social, and cultural implications. After the show, the fair will teach everyone ways to get involved with the fight against hunger locally with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, Community Food Advocates, the Society of St. Andrew, The Cookery, Hands on Nashville Urban Farm, The Nashville Food Project, The Nashville Mobile Market, Martha O’Bryan Center and Nashville Grown. Then, on Wednesday, Co. H is excited to host a talk from Nashville-based artist Chris Roberson at Watkins College of Art, Design, & Film. In room 804, at 9:10pm, kick off the 1st of the month with Roberson and his show “Work & Play.” We all do both, and it will be nice to hear from the artist about how he does the same at such a high level.
Thursday, May 2nd, you can stay in town or out. If you want to drive to Clarksville for their First Thursday Art Walk for May, there will be an opening reception from 5-8pm at the Framemaker of photographer and heck of a nice woman in Melanie Davis. The show will be on display the entire month of May, but this will be another chance to chat it up with the artist. It doesn’t get much better than that. If you stay in town, you should, without a doubt, get a glimpse at some future East Side Storytellin’ alumni in Allen Thompson and Don Gallardo respectively. Both will be playing alongside The Craig Jackson Band at 9pm at Soulshine Pizze Factory (1907 Division Street). Don Gallardo will be the featured musical guest for East Side Storytellin’ at Fat Bottom Brewing Co. on May 7th at 7pm (mark it now!).
Friday begins the epic first weekend of the month art crawl and opening receptions. This Friday, from 4-6pm, at Ensworth High School, Audry Deal-McEver, Susan Harlan, Julie Keller, and Stephen Zerne will be showcasing new work at the Ensworth Theater Gallery. The works will include and be inspired by local landscapes and plant life. It will be called “Indigenous: 2013 Spring Art Exhibit.”
Not to be overshadowed, Watkins’ seniors sour “Up, Up and Away” in the multi-disciplinary showcase from 5-8pm at the Tennessee Art League by the same name as quoted. BA degree candidates Jordan Bickimer, Kellie Bornhoft, Ann Catherine Carter, Kristin Fowler, Rachel Growden, and Pam Jolly Haile, will be featured. The show begins on Friday, but is also a part of the downtown First Saturday Art Crawl on the 4th the following night. The Arts Company and Nashville Fashion Week Executive Committee invite YOU to a preview reception and NashvilleFashion Week 2013 Wrap Party presenting Norman Lerner and showcasing his vintage fashion photography from the 1950’s-70’s in NYC, and also Deb Burton Calagna & Laura Camien showcasing their newest LollyDee Collection based on vintage clothing and jewelry inspired by Mr. Lerner’s photographs, from 5:30-7:30, upstairs at The Arts Company. Space is limited and FREE, but RSVP at art@theartscompany.com no later than May 2nd.
As Saturday, the 4th, begins, you will have your pick of many events to attend. Sticking close to The Arts Company, downstairs they will have “Personal Geometries: Painting & Sculptures: A Visual Journey by Brad Wreyford.” From 6-9pm, like the rest of the crawl, you will be entertained. OPEN Gallery will be presenting the Nashville premiere of works by Caroline Wells Chandler. The setting for this show is The Arcade, the title is inspired by William Blake’s poem “Auguries of Innocence,” and Chandler’s work uses crafts to build a complex web of symbols, signage, and relationships in between. Again, you will be entertained. Basically, if you find yourself downtown at the art crawl this Saturday at all, anywhere you go, you will be entertained.
On Sunday, a day of rest with your friends and family, you may want to scoot on over to 708 Fatherland Street in East Nashville to buy something for your mama. Marla Faith and Nila Frederiksen, from 2-4pm, are selling hundreds of works for just the occasion. They will have tons of works in all sorts of mediums, all price ranges, all styles, and all subjects.
